Commercial Vehicle Crash Research Institute

The Commercial Vehicle Crash Research Institute (CVCRI) is a non-profit organization founded and supported by commercial vehicle collision reconstruction professionals. Our mission is to promote commercial vehicle safety by expanding the study of investigation and reconstruction techniques that are specific to commercial vehicles.

CVCRI focuses on all aspects of the commercial vehicle collision, including the interaction with the road, performance of the vehicle, and protection of the occupant.

CVCRI is working to bring together the expertise of industry professionals, academia, and public agencies to focus on commercial vehicle safety. By improving the understanding of commercial vehicle crashes, CVCRI’s work contributes to the prevention of these crashes, mitigation of their severity, and improvements in survivability.

The work undertaken by the CVCRI intends to:

  • Further the state of the art in commercial vehicle collision reconstruction

  • Inform regulatory efforts by the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) and its agencies, including:

    • The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)

    • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

    • The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)

  • Support research conducted at leading academic institutions

There were 3,675 people who sustained fatal injuries in crashes involving large trucks in 2010, which accounted for over 10% of the nearly 33,000 traffic-related fatalities in 2010. By increasing the understanding of commercial vehicle collisions—in collaboration with industry, government, and academic organizations—we can improve safety. CVCRI solicits support and seeks to partner with other groups from across the transportation safety field interested in moving commercial vehicle safety forward.
